Fungi are world class decomposers, recyclers, symbionts, and bioremediators. Their existence is essential to the health of countless ecosystems around the world, though for various reasons mushrooms and other fungi are often wrongly maligned, avoided, and feared by many people today. However, with a little bit a instruction, knowledge, and experience, anyone can gain a new appreciation for wild fungi and learn the skills involved in becoming a proficient wild mushroom hunter.
Join us with Adam Haritan for an exciting weekend designed to instill confidence in eager mushroom enthusiasts looking to overcome doubts and improve skills. This weekend will provide both indoor and outdoor instruction with time split between introductory mycology lessons as well as outdoor mushroom hunts and harvests in a variety of habitats, including lawns, fields, parks, and forests.
All the basics of wild mushroom hunting will be covered, including:
- Mushroom biology
- Mushroom terminology
- Mushroom and plant interactions
- Spore print techniques
- Fungal key instruction
- Major groups of fungi
- Common edible mushrooms
- Poisonous mushrooms & their toxic compounds
- Medicinal mushrooms
- Medicine-making (decoctions and tinctures)
- Processing and cooking wild mushrooms
We are excited to have Adam Haritan with us this summer to teach a mushroom foraging class. He is an engaging instructor and offers both scientific and personal experience that he seamlessly adds to his classes.
